Barnaby Hosking lived as a hermit on the grounds of Houghton Hall, one of England’s greatest country houses, in accordance with the tradition of solitude established in the 18th century. His dwelling was a rebuilt a large Kazakh yurt, a version of which was later erected in at SE8 gallery, alongside some of the works made on or inspired by the site. The exhibition Habitat, which is chronicled in the artists diary and the texts of the curators, Nicolas de Oliviera and Nicola Oxley, sought to transmit aspects of his temporary retreat from society.
